Introduction to the methods of digital historical research — database construction, network analysis, text mining, digital source editions. Open educational textbooks and methodological guides developed for university courses.

TOOLS

Self-developed digital tools

Browser-based, install-free utilities for source analysis, annotation and database construction. Free for educational and research use.

TOOL TEI NETWORK ANNOTATION

TEI Annotator + Network Visualisation

A browser-based tool for annotating source texts (manuscripts, letters, diaries) and extracting relational networks. Mentions of persons, organisations, works, places and dates can be tagged, and the system automatically constructs a network from co-occurrences.

  • Interactive network graph from co-occurrences
  • Footnotes, version control, annotation propagation
  • TEI XML, CSV and JSON export
  • Optional Stanza/AI pre-annotation (Python backend)

TOOL DATABASE EDUCATION SCHEMAS

Historical Database — Educational Tool

A browser-based tool designed for teaching historical database construction. Four predefined schemas support source-based data entry, harmonisation and relation management — bringing the foundations learnt in Excel and Access into a setup-free environment.

  • Four schemas: prosopography, correspondence, institutional history, parish registers
  • Single-record entry and CSV import
  • Harmonisation and relation management
  • Network, timeline, map and statistical visualisation
  • Excel, HTML, JSON and CSV export
